Computer Application Services (CAS) case study

cas logo

Computer Application Services (CAS), based at Heriot-Watt Research Park (Edinburgh), was formed in 1969 as a Technology Transfer Unit of Heriot-Watt University. In 1993 it was the subject of a management buy-out and is now an employee owned company specialising in the provision of IT solutions to public sector organisations.

Issues

Whilst the existing broadband connection was adequate for day to day needs it was apparent that, as the CAS customer base continued to grow, it was unlikely to be able to meet the predicted demand. In addition, a number of CAS customers had expressed a wish to move to more managed services. The existing broadband infrastructure would not have been able to support such a service provision.

Solution

Working with brightsolid, a Scottish based internet service provider (ISP) and wholesale customer of Atlasconnect Ltd, CAS was able to install a flexible internet access service which enables the company to offer managed IT services to its customers.

Key benefits

  • CAS now has 10 times the bandwidth that it originally had
  • It has retained its original system, so now has a backup service enabling it to carry on its business should there be an outage
  • CAS is able to offer new, and additional, internet business services to all of its customers
  • The solution is flexible enough to be upgraded to meet changing customer demands
