Fulcrum Pharma case study
Fulcrum Pharma, based on the Heriot-Watt Research Park (Edinburgh), is a professional service company providing clients with expert solutions for the development of therapeutic products. Fulcrum provides the full range of drug development and regulatory expertise essential to progress a development programme from research to product approval.
Issues
Whilst the existing broadband connection was adequate for day to day needs with a limited number of consecutive users, it was apparent that if Fulcrum wanted to fulfill its expansion plans with more staff coming on board, then it needed to have much greater bandwidth available for its satellite office in Edinburgh so that its staff could have seamless communications access to applications down south. The existing broadband infrastructure would not have been able to support such a service requirement.
Solution
Fulcrum spent a long time trying to source a solution without realising that the black box on its office wall held the key. The black box contained pre-installed dark fibres which had been connected up into the building from a central co-location centre elsewhere on the park. brightsolid, a Scottish based internet service provider (ISP) and wholesale customer of Atlasconnect Ltd who already had a presence in the co-location building, was able to pick up a pair of fibres and offer Fulcrum a flexible high speed internet access service within a few weeks.
Key benefits
- Fulcrum now has much greater bandwidth that it originally had with the communications bottle-neck removed for ever.
- Fulcrum’s staff are able to operate seamlessly with instant access to all company resources and applications.
- Fulcrum has been able to action its growth strategy and employ additional staff on the site.
- The solution is flexible enough to be upgraded instantly as demand for bandwidth grows and converged applications (voice, video and data) utilise a single IP connection.
