Lewis Limited Case Study
Lewis is a centre of excellence in Subsea well intervention Techniques and Technologies. They are a niche service provider of Bespoke Engineering Design and Integration Consultancy and Project Management Services to both Oilfield Operating Companies and Oilfield Services Companies around the world. Lewis Limited’s offices are located on Aberdeen Science and Technology Park.
Issues
Lewis initially utilised a shared 2mb legacy internet connection with other companies located in their multi-occupancy building. The requirement was for web access and e-mail communication but when they decided to purchase a new server based VoIP telephony service in order to reduce their phone-bills, they needed to get their own ADSL line. This however proved unreliable to support multiple consecutive voice calls which often dropped mid conversation or were crackly. What they needed was a reliable internet connection that would support VoIP calls as well as handle their e-mail and internet traffic.
Solution
Converged Communications Solutions were able to use the pre-installed Atlas fibre infrastructure to connect their communications equipment from the co-location building across the business park to where Lewis’s offices were located. They were then able to pick up the internal fibre wiring within the building itself and patch through so it was fibre end to end. This enabled them provide a high speed un-contended 6mb IP connection which can be increased up to 10mb if required.
Key benefits
- Lewis now has much greater bandwidth than before as well as instant additional capacity when required
- The IP connection supports voice, data and video traffic seamlessly
- The linux based Asterisk VoIP system provided by Emerge Communications has reduced call charges significantly especially for international calls.
- The telephony server also doubles up as a conferencing facility with up to 6 concurrent external calls able to join and participate in a multi-way conference. This improves decision making and overall project management.
- The symmetric nature of the connection will allow Lewis to set up a Sharepoint server to improve client management and allow clients direct access to files and project updates.
- The reliability of the communications system allows Lewis to focus on providing a high quality professional service to their customers
